Ricky Gervais, 60, has revealed he suffered a painful back injury while out on a run today, as he felt a sharp pain in his back while doing up his laces. The After Life star admitted he wanted to ring an ambulance because the pain was so severe he struggled to even make it back home.

Ricky spoke candidly about his injury while speaking on a Twitter Live broadcast this evening, he said: “I’m in a bad way, went for a run at four, tied my shoe up and my back went, agony.

‘Couldn’t walk, took me ages, I had only made it to the end of the street.

“It’s that thing when you are in agony and you can’t walk but you don’t want to look weird to anyone.

“I wanted to lie down and scream, ‘Get me a f***ing ambulance’.”

Fortunately, the star was able to eventually make it back to his Hampstead residence, however, the difficulty did not end there as he struggled to overcome the pain he was experiencing and turned to girlfriend Jane for help.

He continued: “I made it back, laid on the floor, took some naproxen which we have always got because the last time my back went that helped me relax it.

“It gets to five and I’m still in my workout gear. So Jane helped me get undressed.”

The Reading born star has been with Jane for 39 years after the couple met while studying at University College London.

Ricky admitted he was thankful he did not have any upcoming work commitments, as he spoke on his difficulty to cope with standing up at this present moment.

He added: “I’ve got tennis booked tomorrow, that’s got to be f***ing cancelled. Thank f**k I haven’t got a gig.

“Next tour after this one I’m doing it sitting down. I’m changing the genre, it’s not stand up, it’s f***ing sit down.”

Ricky’s show After Life is returning to Netflix for season 3 soon.

The latest run in the critically acclaimed series recently wrapped filming.

If there’s no delay, it’s likely the show will hit Netflix at the end of 2021.

In season 2, Tony’s father tragically passed away, and his funeral will likely be held in the upcoming season.

Matt’s (Tony Basden) marriage also appeared to have been repaired, but there are doubts about whether it’ll be hit with more obstacles during season 3.

Meanwhile, Ricky said last year that After Life series 3 would be its last.

“I’ve already made my mind up there won’t be a four,” he told The Sun.

“And you do put those things out there to make you remember as it’s tempting but… there’s an old saying that ‘to lead the orchestra, you’ve got to turn your back on the audience’.

“That’s true. The audience thinks they want another one, but they’re not sure. So you’ve got to be careful!”
