Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley returned to TV screens on Tuesday morning (January 3) alongside co-host Susanna Reid.
Discussing their Christmas break, Richard, 66, revealed that his wasn't quite as relaxing as he'd have liked, spending much of it suffering from a superbug.
He told viewers: "I had that [superbug] all Christmas for a month, never had anything like it before. In fact, I’m beginning to wonder if there’s a new strain of Covid going around."
He then added: "I took a test every week, it was always negative, but I can’t help thinking that’s what I had"
Prior to falling ill, Richard had suffered a nasty fall, when he and Kate Garraway filmed a special GMB from Whiston Hospital in Preston, to bring awareness to how busy the healthcare is at this time of year – especially with the extreme snowfall and icy roads.
In the midst of the show, the hosts urged people to be careful if going outside, since there is a high risk of people falling on the snow and ice.
This is when Richard revealed that he was one of the unlucky who had suffered a fall on his way to do the show.
"I fell over this morning getting out of the car, a full-on fall," he said as Kate added: "Richard nearly didn't make it on air. It was very tense."
He continued: "A lot of people walking into hospitals all over the country where it's freezing cold with fall accidents. That is really pushing the pressure up."
While the show's regular hosts took a break over December, the show remained on air, with a number of newcomers stepping into the role, including Gordon Smart, who proved quite popular among viewers.
While Gordon hosted two episodes in December, alongside presenter Charlotte Hawkins, viewers took to social media referring to him as "a breath of fresh air."
"@GMB please tell me @gordonsmart is in for the long haul? Such a breath of fresh air! And doesn't want to wake up to that beautiful accent every day?!," one person wrote on Twitter, followed by a heart eyes emoji.
Another chimed: "Great to see a new fresh face on morning tv!! A good addition to the show! Hope you’re here to stay!"
A third shared: "Great chemistry already with Charlotte, I really am enjoying Gordons presenting. I hope he will get a regular slot. Well done."
"Hopefully @GMB will be making you a permanent member of the team. Great presenter," a fourth commented, while a fifth questioned: "The future of GMB?"
