Piers Morgan is no stranger when it comes to sharing what is on his mind. Now, the broadcaster has spoken about Britney Spears’ recent testimony to a Los Angeles court as she gives evidence against her father.
Britney has now laid bare, clearly and shockingly, the horrifyingly draconian prison-like conditions
Yesterday, Britney shocked the world when she spoke to a Los Angeles courtroom, telling those in court that she had been stopped from getting married, as well as claiming she is unable to remove an IUD contraceptive device placed inside her womb to stop her from getting pregnant.
This is due to a 13-year long conservatorship that was granted to her father, Jamie, in 2008, ensuring that he was in control over her wealth, business decisions and personal decisions following her public breakdown in 2007.
Britney, 39, admitted that she has been depressed and traumatised throughout her conservatorship, saying that she had told the world she was happy when she was secretly breaking down inside.
Yesterday was the first time the Toxic singer spoke about her ongoing situation as she stated she believes her father should be locked up.
Now, Piers, 56, has waded in on the situation, describing Ms Spears as a “legal slave” who “must be freed”.
Writing in his Daily Mail column, Piers penned: “Britney has now laid bare, clearly and shockingly, the horrifyingly draconian prison-like conditions under which she has to endure her life in this conservatorship.
“We, the tens of millions of us who bought her records and revelled in her celebrity – and yes, as a former newspaper editor, I now look back and shudder at the way the media frenziedly fuelled the circus around this obviously unstable woman as she spiralled out of control – can look the other way, but we can never again say we didn’t know what’s happening to her.”
He described the measures of Ms Spears’ conservatorship as “draconian” before saying that Britney is living her life as a slave.
During her appearance at court via a virtual audio link, Britney claimed “doctors changed her medication to lithium”, a mood stabiliser after she had told management she wanted to discontinue her Las Vegas ‘Piece of Me’ residency.
She told the court: “I felt drunk. I couldn’t even have a conversation with my mom or dad about anything. My whole family did nothing.”
Britney claimed she wanted to do therapy at home, but has had to go to a location where the paparazzi follow her.
The singer went on to say she was forced to perform concerts, with her management team allegedly threatening to sue her should she decline.
Following the bombshell revelations, a statement for Britney’s dad read: “He is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain.
“Mr Spears loves his daughter and misses her very much.”
Britney said: “This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good.
“I’m traumatised. I’m not happy, I can’t sleep. I’m so angry and I cry every day.”
Taking aim at her father, Ms Spears said: “He loved the control to hurt his own daughter 100,000 percent.”
She said that at one point she was forced to go to rehab against her will and pay $60,000, and her father didn’t care about how distraught she was.
She said: “I cried on the phone for an hour and he loved every minute of it.
“Anything that happened to me had to be approved by my dad.”
She said: “My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, including my management … they should be in jail.”
