“Top Chef” host Padma Lakshmi has been a part of culinary fans’ homes since 2006, so it’s only fitting that she’s been invited to a few big celebrations for them.
“The best part of ‘Top Chef’ is just when I’m on the corner in New York hailing a cab and teenagers come up to me and they’re so excited because they’ve grown up with the show and they have like amuse bouche contests or quick fires in their sleepovers or they invite me to their Bar Mitzvahs!” Lakshmi told Page Six at PaleyFest NY’s panel on the Bravo show.
“That’s what’s cool about ‘Top Chef,’” she added. “That we have actually heavily influenced how a whole generation of Americans think about food. Whether its kids today or people in college who were 10 years old when I started the show and are now graduating and having their own life. And that’s been the greatest reward for me is just to have a real influence on the culture in which I live and I don’t think that the average teenager as many culinary terms when I was a kid certainly.”
Meanwhile, fellow judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons have had celebrations of their own recently.
Simmons welcomed her second child in May, and told us that he’s now “that perfect baby stage where he’s not breakable anymore.”
“He’s sort of in the perfect moment and we’re just loving him up,” she said. “He’s really chill and easy, mostly because I think he doesn’t stand a chance against his older sister. She is the boss in every way. But she loves him. I mean she is so almost aggressively affectionate towards him. I’m scared she’s going to rip his head off because she loves him so much but she just wants to be around him, wants to help him, wants to kiss him all day long.”
And Colicchio is preparing to open his first restaurant outside of an urban area, Small Batch, in Garden City, NY next month, telling us that it’ll be “farm-to-table, celebrating farms in Long Island, wineries in Long Island. Brewers and fish and stuff like that. So it’s going to be Long Island-centric.”
No word on if the restaurant will host any Bar Mitzvahs for “Top Chef” fans though.
