Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirwall have opened up on how they once wanted to have nose jobs after believing they needed to "look as white as possible" to "fit in" to the pop world.

Pregnant Leigh-Anne, 29, who announced she's expecting her first child with fiancé Andre Gray last week, and her bandmate made the heartbreaking confession on the new BBC documentary Leigh-Anne: Race, Pop and Power.

During the powerful film, which airs tonight, viewers will see Leigh-Anne candidly reveal how she feels her race has defined her image in the group and her popularity with fans. She also meets people at last summer’s Black Lives Matter marches and explores pivotal issues, such as unconscious bias and colourism.

And the star later arranges to chat to Jade so the pair can discuss how racism and the colour of their skin has impacted their lives all the way from early childhood to the present day.

Leigh-Anne's mum Deborah is half Bajan and her father John is half Jamaican while 28 year old Jade's mum Norma is Yemeni and Egyptian.

Sitting opposite each other in an intimate chat, Leigh-Anne says: "It was always about us fitting in, and trying to fit into this perfect pop world.”

Nodding her head in agreement, Jade then launches into the story behind their previous desire to change their noses as she says: "I remember we both wanted nose jobs after our first shoot, which is insane now. So ridiculous!"

Clearly horrified by the memory, Leigh-Anne brushes her hands through her hair before saying: "No, please!" as Jade continues to explain what happened.

“That stemmed from our first ever magazine shoot, photoshoot, there I was with my whole face Photoshopped and yours had changed.

"From that moment I thought, 'Oh my god, like, to be beautiful and glamorous you have to uphold this image of basically looking as white as possible.'

Agreeing, Leigh-Anne adds: "Yeah, definitely," before going on to praise her bandmate for always being by her side.

She says: “Jade is my absolute rock and after nearly a decade together she feels more like my sister.”

Further opening up about how the band, which includes pregnant Perrie Edwards, 27, have always offered her their unwavering support, Leigh-Anne says: “I’m really lucky to have them.”

She continues: “Being able to have your best friends with you all the time means that, even if they didn’t realise what was going on with me, they were around to have a laugh with, and it definitely took my mind off how I was feeling.

"I’ll always be thankful to them for that.”
