Liam Payne has opened up on how difficult the coronavirus pandemic has been for him and his three year old son Bear.

The former One Direction star, whose ex Cheryl recently opened up on how they spent Christmas together, explained that he has to take a Covid-19 test and get a negative result before each visit to his little boy – despite the fact that he lives close by.

The 27 year old spoke out about his "complicated" co-parenting situation during an Instagram live with producer Ben Winston, who he worked with across various One Direction music videos in the past.

"I went and saw Bear today we had a little hangout which was nice as I hadn't seen him in a couple of weeks," he started.

"It's hard with the Covid thing as I have to make sure I'm negative before I go over and see him so it's having to wait that couple of days before you can test so…"

The singer, who recently claimed Jesy Nelson left Little Mix for the "same reasons" Zayn Malik left his band, went on to reveal how much his son has grown up in the past year.

He added: "He's only up the street and it's dead complicated but he's gotten so big, huge."

It comes as the doting dad recently revealed his son told him he "needs" him as they went without seeing each other for the "longest" time.

Speaking to Tings magazine back in November 2020, he explained: "He said something quite sad the other day. He was like, ‘Come on, Daddy, we need you now.’

"So those moments are really difficult. It’s the longest I haven’t seen him in his life."

Liam then explained that Cheryl, 37, and he had come to an agreement that he wouldn't be around as much during the pandemic as he continued: "But we discussed from the start and for different reasons, me and Cheryl decided I should be away for a little bit.

"It’s not unusual for me to be in and out of his life. He’s quite a chill child. He doesn’t worry about things too much."

The dad-of-one added that despite his time away from his son, he and Cheryl have a great dynamic to parent their growing boy together.

He said: "It’s nice to kind of lead a double life in that sense. I get to be a dad and a have family in that way, that’s completely out of that zone.

"It’s mine for my own, except for Cheryl and Bear. That’s a completely different scenario. It’s nice because it feels normal.

"There’s no pressure on things, we’ve developed a really good friendship over the course of being co-parents. We just have a good balance of everything, which fits perfectly. It’s all good."
