Speaking on Good Morning America, Keira touched on the importance of the movie: ‘The film focuses on the early years of her life, when she was married to first husband, who took credit for her first four novels. It’s about the fight for her own voice, feminism and gender politics.’

Colette also sees the actress share a steamy kiss with co-star Eleanor Tomlinson, as the character explores her sexuality.

Keira elaborated: ‘They were a celebrity couple, and her husband was brilliant at marketing. He marketed her and didn’t give her voice, but she took her voice back.’

Talking to MailOnline and other publications about acting with such a strong cast of women, he said: ‘Well obviously I loved it, that’s why I did it!

‘It’s great because I suppose there’s a lot of debates and questions now about how much airtime women’s stories get and do we get enough airtime, so this is a wonderful opportunity to hear one particular woman’s great story and as long as those stories are being told people like me have a job, so I love it.

‘I’d much rather do this than The Fast and the Furious seven! Not that I wouldn’t like to do The Fast and the Furious seven, if it hasn’t already been done.’

Talking about playing such a menacing character, he added: ‘Well I’m not really attracted to these roles, I just get offered those roles and I don’t know why. I don’t think I’m particularly cruel in my life, though my children might disagree with me.

‘I don’t know, in a way it’s interesting to play a villain and find what’s interesting about them. Evil people aren’t interesting, but this guy is interesting. There’s something exciting about him, he had this incredible appetite for life, for food and for sex, for everything.

Handsome: The Wire star appeared in good spirits as he attended the red carpet

Sweet: Dominic made sure he stopped and greeted his fans at the star-studded film event

‘There’s something very Orson Wellian about this character, so that’s what I was attracted to and also that he was an immensely famous person who realised late in his life that he has no talent and that he’s eclipsed by his protege. That’s an interesting story, and that’s what really drew me to Willy. And working with Keira was heaven, it was great!’

As well as Eleanor and Dominic, the film’s other cast members also attended the premiere.

Denise Gough, who plays Missy, looked effortlessly chic in a pair of black and metallic studded trousers.

Talking about Colette, director Wash Westmoreland exclusively told MailOnline: ‘Well it was really her personality that jumped out from the biographies, the history books, and her own writing, and just stood up as a completely contemporary person who was relevant to now.

‘She was so ahead of her time back then, and as a gay man I really connected to her as someone who broke barriers and challenged social norms to find her authentic voice.’

Talking about the LGBTQ themes in the film and why it was important to the film, he added: ‘For me and my co-director and late husband, Richard Glatzer, the thing that appealed to us about the film was that it was a heterosexual marriage with a giant queer explosion in it.

‘It has L G B T and Q, it gets all the initials because again Colette was so ahead of her time even though those words didn’t exist then, she was very much a pioneer of what felt natural rather than what society told her so we see in her explorations of sexuality and the way she wrote about it, and the way she publicly performed it, she was just this extraordinary figure who inspired many people to wake up.’

Colette will have a nationwide cinema release date of January 25 2019.
