Kate Garraway shares health update and says sometimes you have to ‘put yourself first’

Kate Garraway has shared an emotional social media post, detailing a health battle.

The GMB star, 54, who recently sported thick glasses after suffering from eye sores, updated fans on her eye battle.

Sharing a photo of herself with one eye nearly closed and watery, Kate began:

"Ouch! But thanks to the brilliant @nhs team @moorfieldsuae not permanent."

She continued: "Inflamed cornea caused probably by wearing my contacts for too long on some very long days recently. Hence the glasses on @gmb on Friday.

"And to think I nearly didn’t get it checked out as was wanting to get back home to do some physio with Derek."

Kate then advised that sometimes you have to put yourself first, as she said: "A further reminder if you are a carer, parent or anyone really you have to sometimes put yourself first otherwise you are no use to anyone you are trying to help.

"48 hours of putting drops in every hour day AND night & I will be back on track. Hope everyone is having a lovely #sunday"

Kate, who recently fought back tears as she gave an update on her husband Derek Draper, explained that a difficult week had led to her eyes becoming irritated.

She said: "What it is I think is I've had a few really long days recently, and I always wear contact lenses."

Her co-host Ben Shephard, 46, was a fan of the new look, commenting: “I like you in glasses, as you know!”

Lucky for Kate, GMB’s resident medic Dr Amir Khan was on the show. Sitting beside her, Amir explained: “If you’ve been wearing contact lenses there is a risk of a scratch on the eye or inflammation of the eye. You may need drops to stop an infection getting in”.

Viewers also clocked on to Kate’s new look, with one person commenting: "Is there something different about Kate?" while another wrote: "Kate needs to push her glasses up closer to her eyes or get smaller frames".

Alongside her Good Morning Britain duties, Kate is busy as a carer for husband Derek, who is struggling with a number of complications following a battle with coronavirus.

Kate and her family have gone through turmoil since her husband Derek, 54, was hospitalised with coronavirus in March last year.

She recently shared how Derek still sleeps around 20 hours per day due to his health issues, which have affected his liver, kidneys and pancreas.
