Kate Ferdinand, 31, spoke out about her views on Mother’s Day and how Rio not getting her a card to mark the special day has affected her in the past. The couple sat down for a candid conversation to discuss their blended family, as Kate has been a step-mum to Rio’s children for years.
When the pair got together back in 2017, Kate assumed the role of step-mum to Rio’s children Lorenz, 16, Tate, 14, and Tia, 11.
The children tragically lost their mum, Rebecca Ellison, to breast cancer in May 2015 at the age of 34.
Rio’s mum, Janice St Fort, 58, passed away in July 2017 after also battling cancer.
Speaking on her podcast Blended, Kate admitted to secretly crying on her first Mother’s Day alongside Rio.
She said: “I wasn’t a biological mum. I think it was our first Mother’s Day – maybe I’d been living here about six months, something like that.
“And although I wasn’t a biological mum I kind of felt like I’d taken on the mum role.
“For me, going from living at home on my own to taking the kids to school, cooking them dinner, I felt like a mum.”
Addressing Rio, Kate recounted: “I really thought I might get a card from you, and I didn’t get a card from you.
“I felt bad to express that in front of you because you guys had lost your mum, and the kids have lost their mum.
“So I just went in my room and I just sobbed my heart out – seriously.”
However, Kate went on to clarify that she felt “selfish” for expecting a card, explaining that she felt like a mum even if not biological.
She said: “And then I felt selfish for wanting a card – how dare I want a card?

“So anyone that’s kind of new in this situation might feel like that because it’s a weird one – I wasn’t a biological parent so how could I expect that? But I felt like a mum.”
Back in January, Kate took to Instagram to make the heartwarming announcement that she is expecting her second child with her husband Rio.
Kate posted the black and white video where she began by walking away from the camera and later turned to the side, moving her coat to reveal her baby bump.
She captioned the video: “We’ve been praying for you…”
Many social media users rushed to the comments to congratulate Kate and Rio on the exciting news.
“I lost my baby around the same time as you in the same way last year. This gives me hope.”
Charomoko added: “Congratulations Kate…Best Wishes throughout your pregnancy.”
Annalous commented: “Oh congratulations what lovely news Kate! So happy for you.”
