The 59-year-old actor, who recently won a multi-million dollar defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard, will co-produce with Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.

Based on Modigliani, a play by Dennis McIntyre, Modi will cover the artist’s time in Paris in 1916. His portraits and nudes featuring elongated faces and bodies were not well received while he was alive. But they were sought after following his death from meningitis in 1920.

Filming begins in spring. Depp said: “I’m incredibly honoured, and truly humbled, to bring [this story] to the screen.

“It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph – a universally human story all viewers can identify with.”

Depp last directed 1997 drama The Brave, in which he starred with Marlon Brando.
