Female rappers like Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are at the top of their game. But it’s no secret that men have long been the predominant rulers of the rap world. Having said that, though, there are, of course, some women who spit rhymes and give even the most talented emcees a real run for their money. As rap and hip-hop were became more mainstream, women like Remy Ma, Roxanne Shante, and Eve threw down with the boys. These rap goddesses had the talent and the flow to dominate an industry that often wouldn’t take them seriously unless they were part of an all-male rap group.
Female lyricists pushed the glass ceiling in the music world — there’s no getting around that. They didn’t throw all traditions to the wind, though. In fact, some of the most impressive female lyricists are more than happy to oblige in one of the oldest traditions in the world — marriage. Some female rappers have husbands you might not know much about.
Remy Ma married rap powerhouse Papoose
Remy Ma and Papoose met through a mutual studio friend who set them up to make a rap track together, as they revealed in an interview with BUILD Series, though Remy Ma had had Papoose on her radar before that. And the pair has been going strong ever since. Papoose has been a huge name in the rap world since the late ’90s, when he made his official debut on Kool G Rap’s Roots of Evil album. He produced over 12 mixtapes in the 2000s and even went on to win the Justo Mixtape Award for Best Underground Artist, as shared on his website. In 2006, he was signed to Jive Records in a deal worth $1.5 million.
In July 2020, the rap star revealed they were anticipating their second child in an interview with Out Loud with Claudia Jordan. When talking about social distancing in the middle of a pandemic, the talented emcee shared, “I love being with my family,” noting, “I get to spend so much time with my amazing wife and my amazing daughter.”
The couple, who have created a number of hits together, tied the knot prior to Ma’s six-year stint in jail, according to People.
Jean Grae and husband Quelle Chris make music together
Rapper Jean Grae and husband Quelle Chris may have a deep history in the music business, but it’s their true passion for lyricism and self-parody that has everyone jealous of their intimate connection. Quelle Chris launched his impressive solo career in 2011, after being featured as a producer on Danny Brown’s earlier albums, and has since released albums like Being You Is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often.
In 2018, sparks flew in the studio when the long-time lovers collaborated on the album Everything’s Fine as an attempt to deal with the crazy society in which we all live. In an interview with NPR, Chris said that their creative partnership was “kinda like the samurai flicks where you travel and you see someone jumping across some logs on the river, and you’re like, ‘Hey, that’s kinda dope. You wanna join me on this mission?'” Grae piped in to gush directly to Chris, saying, “You’re the only person that I’ve ever felt that way about.”
The couple made their partnership official when they married in August 2018.
Rapper Roxanne Shante married a retired boxer
Roxanne Shante is the OG when it comes to female artists in the rap game. She got her start on Mr. Magic’s Rap Attack when she was just 14 in 1984, as noted by Billboard. The young artist went through some serious ups and downs throughout her career, all showcased in the 2018 Netflix biopic Roxanne, Roxanne. Shante is a true emcee icon, and it’s been argued that her contributions to hip-hop are what opened up the door for all other female rappers who came after her.
Shante revealed in an interview with Vlad TV that her husband, Jabbar Ali, is a retired boxer. She doesn’t say much else about her partner, and there isn’t much information regarding his boxing career online. However, his Facebook page tells the story of a man who is a huge advocate for equality and a proud supporter of his wife. Despite the lack of information circling the web about Ali, photos of the two attending events together can be found, and the couple looks truly happy together.
Rasheeda's husband is the CEO of an entertainment company
Rasheeda has been making waves in the rap scene for years, but so has her husband, Kirk Frost. Frost started his own company, D-Lo Entertainment, according to his Twitter bio. The two aren’t just all about music though, and in September of 2019, it was reported that they joined forces to open a hot new restaurant in Atlanta called Frost Bistro. The couple married in 1999, and they have been through the wringer together — often in the public eye — and have come out stronger and more in love than ever.
In an interview with Essence, Rasheeda revealed what it took to overcome the trials and tribulations of her marriage to Frost after he admitted to having an affair on Love & Hip-Hop. When asked about the lessons she’s learned through her decades-long union to the businessman, she said, “The road can get really, really rough. You have to communicate and figure out a way to make sure you’re taking care of each other.” The two make their business and personal lives work by putting in time for their relationship and growing together as a couple.
Cardi B's marriage to rapper Offset won't last much longer
Cardi B and Kiari Kendrell Cephus, otherwise known as Offset, are reportedly no longer together, though they legally remain husband and wife as of this writing. The female rapper, who’s been owning the airwaves, secretly married Offset in the fall of 2017 (via TMZ). He is most well known for his work with his rap group Migos, and has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards since he launched his career in the 2000s. His real taste of fame came in 2013, after Migos released their hit “Versace” (via The Washington Post).
In a 2020 interview with Elle, Cardi B spoke about the peaks and valleys of their turmoil-filled relationship. She said, “I do know that my relationship has a lot of drama and everything. But there’s a lot of love, there’s a lot of passion, there’s a lot of trust, there’s a big friendship. It’s always us against the world.” In an interview with The Breakfast Club, as reported by People, Offset addressed his past infidelity, saying, “That one mistake made me appreciate her.”
Unfortunately, Cardi B filed for divorce from Offset, as Hollywood Unlocked reported in September 2020.
Rapper Nicki Minaj married her high school sweetheart
Nicki Minaj began her love story with Kenneth Petty back in high school. The two dated when Minaj was just 16, eventually parting ways, as noted by TMZ. They were brought back together years later and eventually tied the knot in October of 2019. The two appear to have a relationship full of love, and Minaj gushed about her relationship to Lil Wayne during an interview on Young Money Radio (via People), saying, “When you have someone that feels like your soulmate or someone who understands you, it just makes you feel like you’re on top of the world.”
Petty’s preferred name is “Zoo,” a childhood nickname that stuck with him, according to Billboard. Petty’s backstory isn’t as fun as his moniker, though, as he has a storied criminal past. According to a report in People, before he was Nicki Minaj’s husband, he pleaded guilty to and was convicted of attempted rape and manslaughter in 1995 and 2002, respectively, and will forever be on the Sex Offender Registry.
Rapper Eve married billionaire and entrepreneur Maximillion Cooper
Eve and her husband, Maximillion Cooper, tied the knot back in 2014. Cooper is an impressive man with more than one job under his belt. He’s been a race car driver, film producer and director, and entrepreneur. His most notable accomplishment is the Gumball 3000 car rally, which took off after its inception in 1999. Cooper, who is worth $50 million, has four kids from a previous marriage, and Eve stepped up to be a step-mom, making them a big happy family.
Being an interracial couple, Eve and Cooper have had to have some pretty tense conversations. On an episode of The Talk in June 2020, Eve discussed the difficult conversations she and husband Cooper have had in relation to the death of George Floyd. It was reported in USA Today that the rapper said, “I am having some of the most difficult and uncomfortable conversations I think I’ve ever had, and vice versa, with my husband,” but that those exchanges have been “a beautiful thing.”
