Chris Hemsworth is really putting in the extra work as an ambassador to the Australian tourism board.
This week, while making his way to the beach, the Thor actor came across an American hitchhiker — Scott Hildebrand, a tourist from Chicago — trying to thumb it down the road in Australia. Hemsworth and his buddy Luke Zocchi decided to make this needy traveler’s day by picking him up.
What followed was a hitchhiking story for the ages — one that involved a surprise helicopter ride along the Byron Bay coast. Whether the whole thing was a publicity stunt or just a really nice gesture on Hemsworth’s behalf, I think we can all agree this is one hell of an epic video.
“Picked up a hitchhiker, wasn’t a serial killer which we were stoked about and just happened to be a kick ass musician Scott Hildebrand,” Hemsworth wrote on Instagram.

The best part of the story is that Hildebrand had no idea who Hemsworth was.
Hildebrand shared the entire encounter with the radio station NOVA 919, saying he “didn’t know who they were,” and that he felt “kind of unsure about the whole situation” because Hemsworth and Zocchi were filming the encounter. (Hemsworth later shared the video on Instagram.)
A few miles into their journey, Hemsworth told Hildebrand they were going to stop to switch vehicles to finish their journey. Hildebrand politely offered to chip in for gas, but Hemsworth passed, telling the wary traveler that the gas needed would be a little pricey.
“They said, ‘We’re gonna make a quick stop and switch vehicles,’ and at that point I was like, ‘Oh, I can help pitch for gas’ … and they’re like, ‘You’re not gonna want to do that, it’s gonna be like four grand for that,’” he shared with the station. “That was when I was like, ‘Who are you guys?’”
The next thing Hildebrand knew, they were flying off to the beach in Hemsworth’s helicopter. Throughout the video, Hildebrand looks in awe of the views along the Byron Bay coast and thrilled at the fact that he pulled off the most successful hitchhike of all time.
Assuming Hemsworth has some time on his hands now that his Men in Black reboot has wrapped filming, I’d like him to know that I could use a ride home from work today. Just saying.
