Cardi B stunned the world yesterday when it was announced that she has filed for divorce from husband Offset after three years of marriage.
It emerged that Cardi, 27, filed for divorce from Offset, 28, on Tuesday in Georgia, and is seeking joint custody of their two-year-old daughter Kulture.
It is said that the hip-hop stars are living in a ‘bona fide state of separation’, and that their marriage is ‘irretrievably broken’ and there are ‘no prospects for a reconciliation’.
The split comes four years after Cardi, real name Belcalis Almanzar, met the Migos star at an ‘industry event’.
She said of the meeting: ‘He was very consistent. He really wanted to talk to me.’
Love hadn’t blossomed yet when Cardi collaborated with Offset, real name Kiari Cephus, on the January 2017 song Lick, but by the following month, the pair had their first real date at the Super Bowl on February 2 2017.
Cardi continued to deny that they were together, telling Fader later that year: ‘It’s been a blessing, me meeting him and meeting his friends. I see how hard they work. And that motivated me to work even harder.
‘And I see how good things are going for them and how popping it is to be number one. And I’m like, I want that.’
However, on September 20, Cardi and Offset tied the knot secretly, wearing his and hers tracksuits in Fulton County, Georgia, something that didn’t actually become public until the following June.
So fans were all excited for the impending nuptials when Offset proposed to Cardi on stage in October.
There was no honeymoon period, though, as by January 2018, rumours began circulating that Offset had cheated on the Bodak Yellow star made a sex tape with someone else.
Cardi explained why she stayed with her husband in an interview with Cosmopolitan, saying: ‘Everybody is coming down my neck like, “Why are you not leaving him? You have low self-esteem.” I don’t have low self-esteem. I know I look good. I know I’m rich, I know I’m talented. I know I could get any man I want—any basketball player, football player.
‘I want to work out my s*** with my man, and I don’t got to explain why. I’m not your property. This is my life … I’m going to take my time, and I’m going to decide on my decision … It’s not right, what he f***ing did—but people don’t know what I did, ’cause I ain’t no angel.’
At the same time, rumours began swirling that Cardi was pregnant, and while she initially denied it, asking fans to let her ‘fat in peace’, she confirmed she was expecting during a performance on Saturday Night Live in April, during which she wore a tight dress which showed off her bump.
Two months later, Cardi confirmed that she and Offset had tied the knot the year prior, saying: ‘Well now since you lil nosey f***s know at least ya can stop saying I had a baby out of wedlock.’
And on July 10, Cardi gave birth to their first child, a baby girl named Kulture; she was the first child for Cardi and Offset’s fourth.
Despite some legal issues, with Cardi being charged with assault over an attack in a strip club, things seemed to be going swimmingly for the pair – so fans were stunned when in December, Cardi confirmed that she and her husband had split.
She announced on Instagram: ‘So everybody been bugging me and everything, and you know I’ve been trying to work things out with my baby father for a hot minute now. And we’re really good friends and you know, we’re really good business partners—you know he’s always somebody that I went to to talk to, and we got a lot of love for each other but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time.
‘And it’s nobody fault. It’s just like, I guess we just grew out of love, but we’re not together anymore. I don’t know it might take time to get a divorce, and I’m going to always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father and yeah.’
At the same time, Offset was accused of trying to organise a threesome with two women, and the Bad And Boujee rapper took to social media to apologise to his estranged wife, saying: ‘I wanna apologise to you, Cardi. I know I embarrassed you. I was partaking in activity I shouldn’t have been taking in.’
In an effort to win her back, Offset ambushed his ex while she was performed at the Rolling Loud festival in December, with assistants wheeling floral signs reading ‘Take Me Back Cardi’ on stage.
While many people claimed that the stunt was harassment, Cardi was seen holidaying with the rapper later that month, and they confirmed their reunion in February 2019 when they made out on the red carpet at the Grammys.
When Cardi won the best rap album award for Invasion Of Privacy, she thanked both Offset and Kulture in her speech, saying: ‘I want to thank my daughter. When I found out that I was pregnant, my album was not complete. I had like three songs. … We was like, “We have to get this album done so I can shoot these videos before I am showing.” It was very long nights.
‘You, husband, thank you. Nah, serious, because he was like, “You gonna do this album, girl. We gonna have this baby. We gonna make this album.”’
The couple continued to put on amorous displays on red carpets throughout the year, and collaborated with each other on the duet Clout.
Speaking to Vogue later that year about Offset’s infidelities, Cardi said: ‘Everybody has issues. I believe in forgiveness. I prayed on it. Me and my husband, we prayed on it. We had priests come to us. And we just came to an understanding like, bro, it’s really us against the world.
‘He has my back for everything, I have his back for everything, so when you cheat, you’re betraying the person that has your back the most. Why would you do that?
We have come to a clear understanding. For me, monogamy is the only way. I’ll beat your ass if you cheat on me.’
The pair celebrated Mother’s Day and Father’s Day together with daughter culture this year and it all seemed like happy families on social media.
However, with Cardi riding high on the charts the world over with WAP, her explicit anthem with Megan Thee Stallion, it seems she is now riding solo, as she filed for divorce just days before her third wedding anniversary.
