Bronx resident thanks Ava DuVernay with plaque

Bronx residents showed Ava DuVernay some major love when the director filmed her upcoming Netflix series “Central Park Five” in their neighborhood.

DuVernay’s been filming around New York, but when she hit the Mott Haven section of The Bronx, resident Jimmy Gary Jr. presented her with a plaque.

“He presented her with a thank-you gift on behalf of the neighborhood for shining a bright light on their community. It was an incredibly touching moment for DuVernay, who, along with the series’ production crew, had officially dubbed Gary the ‘Mayor of the Block’ in Mott Haven,” an insider told us. “He was a nice, outgoing gentleman who loved his community and was excited to have Ava and the production there. By the end of their shooting week there, it seemed like he knew all the crew and what they did.”

“Central Park Five” stars Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, Felicity Huffman, Niecy Nash and John Leguizamo.
