Comedian Alan Carr, 44, is still thanking his lucky stars after thinking back to when he dived into waters that are renowned for being shark-infested. The funny man was holidaying in Hawaii at the time and was left taken aback after he found out his drunken antics that night could have been his last.

I’m so lucky to be alive

The Interior Design Masters presenter spoke about the experience in a recent interview with musician Rufus Wainwright on an episode of his Life’s A Beach podcast, where he recalled what could have been a very close encounter with a tiger shark.

“This was back when I was drinking a lot,” he explained.

“I went to Maui and I ended up skinny-dipping.

“Of course, I tell the waitress over breakfast, ‘Guess what I did last night? I skinny-dipped!’”

But he remembered she wasn’t impressed as fear fell across her face.

“Her face went white!” he exclaimed.

“She went, ‘What? In that bay? There are so many tiger sharks down there!’

“I’m so lucky to be alive.”

Despite his near run-in with the razor-sharp toothed fish, the experience hasn’t put him off visiting the idyllic island again, which is a popular surfing destination.

He told Rufus: “I love it there.

“The Hana Highway is just this winding road that goes through all these lush tropical landscapes and there’s waterfalls and everything, we love it.”

But he added, jokingly: “Just don’t go swimming with the sharks – naked, or otherwise!”

His recollection comes following numerous shark attacks off Maui’s shores.

Last month, a 73-year-old man survived a bite to the calf, 40 yards from shore according to the Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety.

The shark was estimated to be 8 feet in length, the department said in a press release.

On separate occasions in December, sharks in Maui’s waters claimed two victims and left another with “severe trauma”.
