The Winds of Winter is the sixth book in the A Song of Fire and Ice series by George R R Martin. Of course, the series is now well known for its HBO adaptation, Game of Thrones. But the next book in the Westeros universe is yet to be released and fans may be frustrated to learn another delay may make their wait even longer.
Has The Winds of Winter been delayed again?
Fans were expecting a happy announcement from their favourite author, with some thinking the book may be on its way to shelves at the beginning of 2020.
However, there are concerns over the way the TV series may have forced him to delay his process, given the way the series ended was very different to that which he imagined.
Speaking to a German website last year, he said: “People know an ending, but not the ending.

“The makers of the TV show had overtaken me, which I didn’t expect.”
It has been reported that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the show’s creators, had special consultations with Martin to give them ideas for the upcoming plot in books which he had not yet written.
However, the final series of Game of Thrones made some viewers incredibly angry, with many furious at how the show ended.
One of the biggest moments in the end of Game of Thrones was that Jon Snow killed Daenerys, after she became tyrannical and vowed to kill more people after her massacre at King’s Landing.

Following this, various characters were taken prisoner, and centrally the next king is decided: Bran Stark, a choice which left many fans furious.
And Jon Snow was sentenced to continuing his life in the Night’s Watch at the wall, despite the Night’s Watch being seemingly pointless after the events of preceding episodes.
Despite this, the creators have clearly gone off piste, as Martin has specified, which perhaps has meant he has had extra pressure to write a new story.
Could it be that, because of the unsuccessful ending to Game of Thrones, Martin must now invent a new way for his characters to fulfil their destinies?

Either way, there is one saving grace which will leave fans hopeful.
George RR Martin has been named the Master of Ceremonies at Worldcon, a science fiction convention which takes place annually.
This year, it takes place in New Zealand, and an airline even offered Martin free air fare to their country so he can finish The Winds of Winter in peace.
However, in a blog post, Martin replied to this, saying: “If I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon 2020, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done.
“Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.”
The dates of the convention are July 29 to August 2, 2020, meaning Martin has a few months left to finish it before a likely Christmas release.
Fans will be desperate to hear a snippet the new book, but hopefully he has not had to revisit the entire plot between the Game of Thrones series ending at the start of Worldcon.
