Winds of Winter: George RR Martin says Game of Thrones had ‘an end, not THE end’ of ASOIAF

It’s now been almost a decade since the last book in A Song of Ice and Fire was published. While there’s still no news on when The Winds of Winter will be released, author George RR Martin has now teased that Game of Thrones’ ending was different to his planned conclusion in A Dream of Spring after all. The 71-year-old made the reveal in a new interview with a German outlet.

Speaking with Welt, Martin was asked if having seen Game of Thrones finish his story before he could in the books put him under pressure.

The author said: “People know an end – not the end.

“The makers of the TV series overtook me, which I didn’t expect.

“Nevertheless I continue what I’ve been doing for years: I still try to finish first the next book Winds Of Winter and then the follow-up novel A Dream Of Spring.”

He added: “These are the things I concentrate on. After that, we will see.”

The comment that fans have seen “an end – not the end” will come as quite the shock.

After all, Martin has said in previous interviews how the main plot points of his planned narrative for remaining books The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring are what he told the Game of Thrones show runners and what manifested in the final episodes.

So, presumably, the author means that Bran Stark will still become king under an elected monarchy.

And by “the end” Martin probably means all the details that are his and plans for different secondary characters that we didn’t see in Game of Thrones.

After all, A Song of Ice and Fire’s ending will be his official conclusion to the story without the creative input of HBO or the showrunners.

Meanwhile, the author also spoke in the interview of how he can only focus on one project per day at a time.

This may explain why he’s taking so long to finish writing The Winds of Winter.

Martin said: “You see, when it comes to writing novels, I can only take one step at a time.

“I have writer friends who can work simultaneously on three or four completely different projects.

“They start with a novel in the morning, continue with short stories in the afternoon, and in the evening they write a screenplay.

“I can’t do that. When I write novels, I immerse myself completely in a fictional world.”

The author added: “It takes up all my imagination, I have to live through it.

“Editing a draft text, working on films as a producer or simply being a cinema owner is easier compared to writing a novel.”

Meanwhile, Martin has set himself a deadline to have The Winds of Winter published by July 29.

This is when The 78th World Science Fiction Convention takes place in Wellington, New Zealand.
