Reflections In Colour

As we emerge from the Paralympics reeling at the obstacles those with disabilities must climb, photographer Chris Howard’s book of landscapes illustrates beautifully both the challenges and hopes of a life constrained by pain. His stunning images of the natural world come with reflections from sufferers of the muscle-wasting disease muscular dystrophy on what the scenes mean to them: freedom, longing, loss, motivation and possibility are recurring themes. Louise Halling, 42, was inspired by Boats At Deal (pictured) because she often feels like ‘a small boat on a big sea’, but water, she says, ‘gives me a freedom I don’t have on land . . . in the water I am free’.
