SHED HEAVEN by Anna Groves (National Trust Books £9.99)

The British own more of them than any other country on earth — a staggering 11.5 million — and yet the humble shed is easily ignored.

This book brings to light their weird and wonderful world, and some of the eccentrics who have called them home, from the Cornish folk hero Reverend Hawker who spent days on end looking out for shipwrecked sailors from his driftwood hut atop the cliffs, to the floating shed adrift in the Shetland isles, pictured above.

Even Virginia Woolf had one, proving there really is nothing more desirable than a shed of one’s own.
